Christmas lights in Cork, Ireland 2020.

Here are some of the Christmas lights around Cork City in Ireland. Hope you have a nice safe and fun time this year after all the upheaval that we experienced because of the pandemic.

Socially distanced French / English language exchange

 12pm Saturday 5 December 2020


Fitzgerald's Park, Mardyke Walk, Cork.

Join us on Saturday 5 December 2020 at 12pm for a socially distanced French / English language exchange. We will meet at the main entrance to the park and you can grab a coffee if you like. We will then go for a short walk and you can practise your target language (French or English) with native speakers. 

Please make yourself aware of the Health Service Executive (HSE) guidelines on COVID-19 (en français).

Adding Colour to Cork - Cork murals

Have you seen the murals [une murale in French] on the walls of Cork? Here are some of the ones you can find around the city.

Which one is your favourite?

1. This one is of a kingfisher. It is located at the junction of Lapp's Quay and St. Paul's Avenue (near entrance to the Paul Street carpark). The artist is Curtis Hylton. You can get more info here.




2. This one is in Carey's Lane (which links St. Patrick Street to Paul Street). The artist is Garreth Joyce and it has a French flavour. Well, it is located beside the Huguenot Cemetery after all! For more info see here.





3. This one is in the Peace Park (also known as Bishop Lucey Park) on Grand Parade. The artist is Fintan Magee. Find out more here



4. This one is in Crane Lane. Not sure who the artist is. Any ideas?


5. This one is in Kyle Street (at the junction with Cornmarket Street). It is called 'Rising to the Bait' and is by Peter Martin. Find out more here.



6. This one is on Anglesea Street (at the junction with South Terrace). It is by ACHES and depicts a hurler. It is part of the Ardú street art initiative organised in conjunction with the City Council. Find out more info about the mural here




7. This one is on Half Moon Street (at the back of the Opera House) and is by Dusto. It depicts Irish writers and poets, can you name them? Find out more here.





8. This mural is on Liberty Street and it marks the 100th anniversary of the Burning of Cork and the death of Lord Mayor, Terence MacSwiney. You can also see Margaret Lucey, the Wallace sisters and Alfred J. Hutson in the mural. It is by Garreth Joyce and is part of the Ardú street art initiative mentioned above.


9. At the Kino on Washington Street, you can see this mural by the artist, Maser. It is also part of the Ardú street art initiative (map of locations below). 




10. This mural by Deirdre Breen in on Wandesford Quay. It is part of Ardú.




11. This mural on Harley Street (at the side of the Metropole Hotel, McCurtain Street) is by Shane O'Driscoll. It is part of Ardú. 





12. This one depicts the Burning of Cork (it happened 100 years ago in December 1920) is on Grattan Street. It is part of the Ardú street art initiative and the artist is Peter Martin.




13. This mural, named 'Lovebirds', is also on Grattan Street and it is also by Peter Martin. The lovebirds in question are the Lord Mayor of Cork, Terence MacSwiney, and his wife, Muriel. 




14. This mural is on junction of Coach Street and Kyle Street (near Mercy Hospital). It is part of the Ardú street art initiative. The artist is James Earley.

Online language exchange

The Cork French / English language exchange continues online 😀 

Since COVID 19 stopped us from meeting in person in March 2020, we have moved online and regularly have people joining us from Cork and other parts of Ireland, as well as from other places around the world. You never know who you will meet!


We meet ONLINE every two weeks (still Monday at 8pm Irish time). So if you want to practise your French or English with native speakers - Check out the Meetup page for details of dates and how to register.
